NRW PROJECT - TAIF, SAUDI ARABIA

• In 2013, NWC engaged IAC for NRW project to study and understand the condition and performance of its 1,200 km water network in the City of Taif, Makkah Region supplied by a large SWCC desalination plants • FAE support IAC to complete field survey, DMAs validation and repair work on 967 km of network serving nearly 900,000 people in a period of 2 years

SURVEY

• FULL SURVEY OF TAIF WATER INFRASTRUCTURE
• EXTENSIVE GIS MAPPING TO VISUALIZE AND MODEL WATER NETWORK FROM SUPPLY TO HOUSEHOLD
• DESIGN OF 60 DISTRICT METERING AREAS ACROSS TAIF TO MEASURE NRW MORE ACCURATELY

IMPACT

QUANTIFY & ANALYZE

• IMPLEMENT THE DMA STRATEGY AND QUANTIFY THE LEVEL OF NRW
• PRIORITIZE AREAS IN NEED OF URGENT ASSET RENEWAL PROGRAMS AND/OR REPAIRS

USD 5.8m annual savings for NWC

10% NRW (vs-33% prior to Aramoon contract)

-30% reduction of operating pressure

IMPLEMENT & MANAGE

• IMPLEMENT AN ACTIVE LEAK DETECTION AND REPAIR PROGRAM USING A RANGE OF ACOUSTIC, GAS, CROSS CORRELATION AND IN-LINE DETECTION TECHNIQUES
• PUT IN PLACE A SMART PRESSURE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM ALLOWING MONITORING OF FLOW RATES AND ADJUSTMENTS OF PUMP PRESSURES TO MEET CHANGING DEMAND PATTERNS

780 leaks detected and repaired across the city

+15 years extension of assets life

-60% reduction of pipe bursting incidents in the network

Aramoon undertook a large project
to automate the operations for
water supply in Mecca & Mina in 2017

NWC implemented a SAR50m ($13.3m) Smart Operations Project in Mecca & Mina in order to switch from manual operations to automated operations, in a project covering a 25.5km2 and a 996km pipe network and 28 reservoirs Mecca region faces unique seasonal water consumption challenges, with nearly 3m pilgrims entering the state for a 6 day period every year

UPDATE

•Rework and update the GIS mapping of the area equivalent to 430km in length including reservoir diagram, connections, fire fighting and cooling networks and addition of new lines and control

IMPACT

QUANTIFY & ANALYZE

•In order to deliver a comprehensive project Aramoon conducted a GIS update and undertook DMZ designs, Civil constructions and Mechanical installations (including gates, valves, strainers, PRVs, etc.)

170km of pipe network covered by leak detection system

830 pressure reducing systems installed

GIS update covering over 430km

IMPLEMENT & MANAGE

•Proceed with all the necessary mechanical installations and layout of AMR meters, pressure controls and water quality sensors •Put in place Water Quality monitoring systems to ensure consistent quality of water supplied and SCADA systems to monitor and changes

Fully operational OCC with 12 screens to monitor network as well as manage, store and backup data

Large Diameter Batha
Trunk Sewer Rehabilitation,
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

As the capital and most populous city of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh has an extensive sewage system that serves a population of eight million people. Excessive infiltration and chemical corrosion of the sewer over many years had resulted in the suspected loss of structural integrity of the sewer. FAE / Downley Consultants was hired as project manager to oversee the detailed investigation, condition assessment, risk assessment and rehabilitation design work for 5 km of trunk sewers consisting of 1200, 1400 and 1700mm diameter Asbestos Cement and 2000mm diameter reinforced concrete pipes and including 38 manholes. A major requirement was to design a solution which could be implemented without environmental impact. Access to the sewer was limited for both inspection and subsequent rehabilitation due to its location beneath a 4m deep rectangular stormwater culvert in a heavily-trafficked main road.

After inspection and a detailed review of potential options two possible solutions were determined as being feasible, cost-effective and meeting the environmental concerns during installation: CIPP lining and spiral-wound lining. The detailed works included: Combined CCTV, sonar and laser inspection of the entire length of sewer under investigation Site visits and investigation of collected information for detailed condition assessment Data management and flow control of the network Detailed rehabilitation option evaluation and alternative analysis based on assessment evaluation and potential high vertical loading due to overlying stormwater culvert Project management, specification development for CIPP & spiral lining.
